Message Great Site! How much does the 5-day-old moon vary from month to month?
Reply The new moon might have occurred at any time during a 24 hour period. On average the terminator will advance just over 12° - roughly triple the width of Copernicus - during that time. The maximum deviation from IM's assumed terminator position for any night is therefore about 6° - roughly the width of Ptolemy.

Message We were really pleased to find your site. We would be interested in more moon phase infor for the casual observer. Also, whatever planets would be visible for us. We are in Glen Ridge, New Jersey. That is just a few miles west of New York city. Any guidance in this area would be helpful. Thanks - and we love your site!
Reply You might take a look at Celestial Times. NY is well inside its range of calculated latitudes.

Reply MIDI files are fast to download, unlike WAVeform files. However, the end effect is strongly dependent on your soundcard, and can vary from near-CD quality to "Stylophone". Still, at least you can switch the it off!

Message This has been fun, I didn't know there was a 'moon site' I was trying find out why we can see the moon during the day? I probably learned this in school, but that was a long time ago! Can you give me an answer? Or direct me to where to get it?
Reply During the month, the Moon travels right the way round the Earth, so it is actually up during the day as much as during the night. However, it tends to be bigger and brighter at the times when it spends more time in the dark nighttime sky, and vice versa. The brightest, fullest Moon rises around sunset and sets around dawn, but when (two weeks later) it is in the sky throughout the day it is a thin, dim crescent and just can't be seen against the bright sky. The best time to see a daytime Moon is around the first and last quarters, when it is fairly bright and is up for half the day and half the night.

I still find it hard to believe man can solve the problems to reach the moon and yet can't find peace on earth. Do you plan to do a site on any of the planets? It is such fun to learn about our solar system and you have hit on a very good teaching tool! Perhaps you could raise some funds by making a CD available. Best Wishes, Don

Message I'm working on observing the 100 specific lunar objects as required by the Astronomical League's Lunar Observation Club in order to obtain their certificate. I've already done 87 and have just 13 more (nostly telescopic) to go. Obviously, your site is a magnificent resource and I wish I had found it sooner. Rukl's Atlas, patience, good weather and seeing are a must. Glad to see the other observer's comments linked to Rukl. Wouldn't it be nice if your site was also coordinated to the 100 AL objects specifically to help future certificate seekers? Many thanks for all your hard work. I very much appreciate it and have bookmarked it under my collection of "Astronomy-Lunar". Would love to link you to my own observatory site: http://www.bluebirdobs.org Best wishes and clear skies! -----Jerry Persall (Bluebird Observatory)
